The hospital in the north of the country did not want to “confirm or deny” the information, but Stéphane Thirion, the friend and biographer of the five-time winner of the Tour de France, told AFP in the evening that Eddy Merckx was “out of intensive care.”
According to Het Nieuwsblad, the 74-year-old former champion, who fell on Sunday during a trip with friends, caused him a “serious head injury”.
He was to undergo Monday additional exams, according to the same source.
