SAILING: Armel Le Cléac’h is still one step closer to victory in the Vendée Globe. But beware Alex Thomson still hopes to return against the Breton.
Alex Thomson (Hugo Boss) continues to fight back against Armel Le Cléac’h (Banque Populaire), the Vendee Globe leader for over a month and within a week of arrival in Les Sables d’Olonne. At 3pm, the Welsh skipper is only 131 miles behind, while the gap was 214 miles eleven hours earlier.
The Welshman admitted yesterday that it was imperative to return within 50 miles within 48 hours for any hope to win. For its part, the Breton is in a hurry to finish.
The yo-yo continues. Behind the third place skipper, Beyou (Maître CoQ), is also close, but remains at 700 miles from the leader. The arrival at the finish at Sables d’Olonne for the leading duo could come on Wednesday or Thursday of next week.
