An Austrian paraglider aged 42 years died Wednesday night during a fall on a beach below the Dune du Pilat in Gironde, reported Thursday by the emergency services. According to firefighters, the accident occurred around 7pm. The paraglider dropped on the beach after a “loss of control of the veil” and the man “was declared dead on the spot” , said the fire department of the Gironde.
The Pilat Dune, the highest dune in Europe (110 meters), located at the entrance to the Arcachon Basin, is a center for paragliding . “We identify regular accidents on the Dune du Pilat, mainly because of the increasing number of practitioners of the sport, but these accidents are rarely fatal” , stressed firefighters.
