CYCLING: The German rider won the sprint in the second stage of the Tour de France …
Marcel Kittel won on Sunday the 2nd stage of Tour de France between Dusseldorf and Liège. The German rider of the Quick-Step team beat the sprint of the French sprinter Arnaud Démare (FDJ) and his compatriot André Greipel (Lotto-Soudal). This is the 10th victory of his career on the Tour. So much for Yoann Offredo and Taylor Phinney, the two breakaways who managed to stay away up to the last kilometre when the sprinters teams at the front of the peloton swallowed them up.
Despite the very low profile of this stage, the day has not been easy for the team. Blame it on the rain, that almost never stopped falling and that the tired body and especially the heads. Everyone feared the fall … which eventually happened 30 kilometers from the finish. Chris Froome and Romain Bardet were on the ground and had to use the assistance of their team mates to return them to the peloton. Geraint Thomas retains his yellow jersey.
