ARREST: British Police confirmed on Thursday that they had arrested the Wikileaks founder, Julian Assange in London
British police said Thursday that they had arrested Julian Assange. The Australian computer scientist, founder of Wikileaks, was a refugee at the Embassy of Ecuador in London since June 19, 2012.
“Julian Assange, 47, was arrested today, Thursday, April 11, by officers of the Metropolitan Police Service (MPS) at the Embassy of Ecuador,” said Scotland Yard, explaining that the arrest was conducted under a June 2012 warrant issued by the London Westminster Magistrates Court for failure to appear in court.
By taking refuge in the Ecuadorian embassy, the founder of WikiLeaks had at the time violated his judicial control. He was wanted by the Swedish courts in a case of rape and sexual assault. For its part, Ecuador ended the asylum status enjoyed by the whistleblower “after repeated violations of international conventions and protocols of daily life” .
Julian Assange was placed in police custody in a London police station and will be “presented to Westminster Court as soon as possible”.
