Orange Alert for thunderstorms

The Var and Bouches-du-Rhone remain in orange alert for thunderstorms in the early afternoon of Monday 16th July

Meteo France has placed two departments, the Var and Bouches-du-Rhone, on orange alert for violent thunderstorms scheduled for Monday 16th July, 2018. Already on Sunday, an orange alert had been issued in the final of the World Cup football.

The Pyrénées-Atlantiques, Hautes-Pyrénées, Haute-Garonne, Ariège, Gers, Tarn, Aveyron, Tarn-et-Garonne, Lot-et-Garonne and Lot are no longer on alert since the end of this morning.

Other affected areas in the afternoon

According to Météo France, “less active thunderstorms were still circulating from the south of the Landes to the Pyrénées-Atlantiques” in the early afternoon:

“The intense storm has left the harbor of Marseille and moves to Toulon along the coast. The city of Marseille was strongly affected in its southern districts and Calanques where more than 50 mm were observed in the previous hour. The Côte Bleue has also been strongly affected in its littoral fringe with similar accumulations. A stormy line in the Mediterranean beached on the coast between Cassis and Toulon giving heavy rain and hail on the littoral zone. A few storms have formed in the Bouches-du-Rhône between Istres and Apt but they do not give any significant accumulations.”

In the early afternoon of Monday, thunderstorm activity decreases on Marseille and its region. “The rain persists with lower intensities, say the forecasters. During Monday afternoon, the stormy line in the Mediterranean moves towards the Var and the Alpes-Maritimes. They particularly affect the coastal zone but some strong thunderstorms can go up in the lands as far as the Verdon. Hail, strong gusts of wind and strong cumulative rainfall in a short time are expected. ”
