Coupe de France: PSG Wins, but the Herbiers have been Valiant Competitors

Wednesday night, the PSG won its fourth Coupe de France in a row, facing a valiant club Herbiers (2-0), which will be held in front of the Parisian ogre.

A chasm was supposed to separate them: the PSG has logically won its fourth Coupe de France in a row, a record, but without managing to crush the brave team Herbiers, defeated 2-0 on Tuesday night at the Stade de France.

Coach Unai Emery, on the start, leaves the Parisian club with a seventh trophy in two years, but a funny feeling. He would have probably dreamed of a more beautiful party for his last game at stake.

270 times smaller

His team only managed to score two goals, including a penalty kick from Edinson Cavani (74th) against a third division club budget 270 times smaller.

In the first half, the Argentinian Giovani Lo Celso had logically opened the scoring in favour of the Parisians (25th minute) it must be recognised rather unlucky so far with three shots at goal in the first twenty minutes.

PSG thus offers its fourth consecutive Coupe de France (French Cup), a record for the club which also has the highest number of trophies in this exercise, twelve in total.

But the herbiers can go out with their heads up. Their goal keeper Matthieu Pichot was heroic and they managed to avoid a more severe addition despite the constant pressure of the Parisians, who confiscated the ball, as expected.

Their coach Stéphane Masala had said it well: he did not set any accounting goals and even gave himself “0 chance to win”.

Indeed, his players have almost never had frank opportunities in front of the goal of Kevin Trapp, but have lived up to the incredible atmosphere of the Stade de France, where a whole Vendée people had come to support them.

Until thrilling their fans in the final seconds, trying to score, before being taken over by a Paris defender.

Under the eyes of Neymar

However, they predicted the worst by evoking the biggest routs of the Coupe de France finals, and the famous 5-0 conceded by Nantes against Saint-Etienne in 1970. There was nothing.

And they did more than good under the eyes of President Emmanuel Macron and PSG star Neymar, back in Paris to support his family and end his recovery, two months after his right foot surgery in Brazil.

PSG still has some satisfaction after this match of course. Despite his failed campaign in the Champions League, he won everything on the national scene, with the same record in the Coupe de France.

Superb epic Herbiers

Uruguay striker Edinson Cavani, thanks to his goal on penalty, proved once again that he was the man of the finals, with a total of 11 goals in 9 finals of national cups with Paris.

In scoring, the Argentinian Giovani Lo Celso also recalled that it will have been a satisfaction of the season: the Argentine scored 4 goals in his last 6 matches in all competitions “, with the PSG, noted the statistician Opta .

Kylian Mbappé will not have been lucky to see his goal canceled after using video referee assistance.

A page turns in Paris, with the departure of Emery and the probable arrival of the German Thomas Tuchel.

The match tonight, as the last two draws conceded by Paris in the league suggest that the club has the head elsewhere, turned to the many issues that await it: the new coach, the management of the mercato or fair play financial.

This final that rewarded the superb epic Herbiers was a great moment for the team from Vendee, but probably a mere formality for their opponents of the day.

After the match, the Herbiers got a huge ovation from their fans, and a giant “clapping”, as if they had won the World Cup. Then a hedge of honor Parisians.
